Demand for essential food items imminent

Following the imposition of a controlled price for essential food items during this budget a danger of a serious demand is imminent for dhal and other essential food items.

Reports reaching us confirm that the dhal traders has shown their resentment against the controlled price and stopped importing dhal and the sprats and dry fish importers has reduced their orders.

When we inquired about this from few dhal wholesale dealers they said since there is a maximum retail price certified over the wholesale price they are highly affected. Further they said they have stopped new dhal orders until the government creates a condusive environment we can do business.

Therefore there would be a large dhal shortage in the market and the prices would increase in the coming few days

When we tried to inquire about the shortage of these essential foods from the trade and commerce minister Rishard Bathiudeen we came to know he has gone overseas and a ministry officer said that they are trying to sort the situation with the finance ministry.

When we tried to contact the chairman of the Sathosa Mohamed Rizwan he refused to answer the call.
