Recently Public Enterprise and Kandy City Development Minister Lakshman Kiriella was accused of planning to give Knuckles lands belonging to Sri Lanka State Plantation Corporation to private investors.
The minister had called a press conference yesterday (7) and officials of Sri Lanka State Plantation Corporation also attended the conference.
Responding to allegations, the minister said no projects within the Knuckles reserve have been approved and no lands have been given to any person or a company.
The Chairman of Sri Lanka State Plantation Corporation also said no permission has been granted for any projects within the Knuckles reserve or government owned lands near the Knuckles. He further said that the Knuckles reserve remains unharmed.
Although environmentalist Sajeewa Chamikara had also been invited for the press conference to discuss these allegations, he did not attend.
When www.lankanewsweb.net contacted environmentalist Sajeewa Chamikara with regard to this, he said that he was informed of the press conference only 10 minutes before the commencement of the press conference and he is ready to engage in a live debate regarding this matter anytime.
