Co-cabinet Spokesperson, Minsiter Rajitha Senaratne said that although the Cabinet has approved the death penalty to eradicate drug trafficking, he is against it. He said this at a press conference held today (11) in Colombo.
Even though all members of the Cabinet unanimously approved this decision, implementing the death penalty will not be beneficial, he added.
The Minister noted that researches conducted in various countries in the world have proved that drug racket cannot be eradicated through implementing the death penalty.
Currently, there are 19 drug traffickers in prison who have been found guilty and sentenced to death by the court; they will be hanged to death, the Minister added.
He went on to mention that the President has informed the Ministry of Justice and Prison Reforms to prepare a list of names immediately. Support of the tri forces will also be acquired in the future to fight drug trafficking, he added.
