Lamahewa, Rangajeewa re-remanded till 21 August

Fort Magistrate’s Court today (7) ordered to further remand former Prisons Commissioner Emil Ranjan Lamahewa and Inspector of Police Neomal Rangajeewa till 21 August.

They had been remanded over the 2012 Welikada prison clash in which several inmates were killed.

The case was heard by Colombo Additional Magistrate Priyantha Liyanage and the defence lawyers said that their clients have not been able to obtain bail due to a delay in carrying out investigations. Officers of the Criminal Investigations Department (CID) said that the investigations are being carried out without delays or obstacles.

However, the CID officers have further informed that they require more time to finish investigations since they have to examine more than 200 evidences with regard to the incident.

The Magistrate ordered to further remand the suspects till 21 August. The CID officers were also asked to submit a report on the progress of investigations on the same day.
