A special investigation unit of Sri Lanka Bureau of Foreign Employment has arrested three Japanese nationals over cheating over Rs 8 million claiming to provide jobs in Japan.
The raid was carried out according to information received by the bureau which said that the accused are operating a firm named ‘Eco Japan Travel’ without proper license from Sri Lanka Bureau of Foreign Employment.
The investigation officers had raided the above mentioned firm in Homagama, and three persons including a Japanese national were arrested. The arrested Japanese person had come to Sri Lanka on a tourist visa. Investigations have revealed that he was in the country even after the expiration of his visa.
The suspects were produced before the Homagama Magistrate’s Court and were remanded until 20 June.
Visa of the arrested Japanese person had expired on 13 September 2017.
After the raid, about 20 people lodged complaints with the bureau. According to the complaints received by now, the suspects have defrauded more than Rs 8 million.
Minister of Telecommunication, Digital Infrastructure and Foreign Employment Harin Fernando and Deputy Minister Manusha Nanayakkara have given instructions to take stern legal action against those who send people aborad illegally.
Deputy General Manager Keerthi Muthukumarana, manager of the investigation unit C.G. Welagedara, law enforcement officers P. Ferdinandu, S.K. Pradeep Kumara and other officials of the bureau including Wasantha Chandra Kumara and Public Assistant Amila Perera participated in this event.
