The Speaker’s Office says that members for the Constitutional Council will be appointed within this week.
All parties have handed over the names of proposed new members for the Constitutional Council to the Speaker, and the Speaker will announce the names.
The Constitutional Council consists of ten members. The Speaker, Prime Minister and Opposition Leader are official members of the Council, and six more members are nominated by the Prime Minister, Opposition Leader and other parties of the parliament.
The President must nominate another member for the remaining vacancy. Since the tenure of former President’s representative Minister Mahinda Samarasinghe has not expired, he will continue to perform as the President’s representative in the Constitutional Council.
