Who creates family issues?

Former Defence Secretary Gotabaya Rajapaksa yesterday (9) told media that certain newspaper reports which claim former President Mahinda Rajapaksa is planning to field Basil Rajapaksa for the presidential election instead of him have been published in order to create issues within his family.

Responding to journalists’ questions, he further stated that he too proposes Basil Rajapaksa for presidency.

He must also explain how the newspaper reports regarding fielding Basil Rajapaksa lead to issues within the family, if his choice is also Basil Rajapaksa.

Mahinda Rajapaksa has the power to take the final decision about SLPP’s presidential candidate. Giving a statement to ‘The Hindu’ newspaper, he had stated that since Namal Rajapaksa has not fulfilled age requirements to contest the presidential election in 2020, he will field one of his brothers for the presidential election.

With that statement, SLPP divided into several groups in support of former President’s brothers, Basil Rajapaksa, Gotabaya Rajapaksa and Chamal Rajapaksa. It’s no secret that Gotabaya Rajapaksa is pursuing the dream of presidency. Did he just act in front of media?

However, Gotabaya, who is at the forefront of the battle of the presidential candidacy, has also expressed support for Basil Rajapaksa. If the former President names someone other than Basil Rajapaksa as the presidential candidate, it will certainly create issues within the family.

Irrespective of what they tell to the country, there are already disputes within the Rajapaksa family over power. ‘Jana Balaya Kolambata’, which was organized by Namal while Basil was not in the country, is also another part of the same dispute. Now, giving Mahinda Rajapaksa the task of nominating Basil, Gotabaya has created another dispute.

Listening to what people such as Gammanpila say about Gotabaya’s opinion would be funnier.
