The Chief Financial Officer (CFO) of Huawei Company has been arrested in Canada.
Meng Wanzhou, or Sabrina Meng and Cathy Meng, is the CFO of the Chinese tech giant Huawei, and faces extradition to the United States. She was apprehended in Vancouver on December 01, per reports of the Canadian Justice Department. Meng serves as Deputy Chairwoamn of Huawei’s board.
Canadian Justice Department Spokesperson Ian McLeod stated that Meng is sought for extradition by the United States, and a bail hearing has been set for Friday. He added that the Canadian Justice Department is not in an entitlement to share details of the case. Meng was granted a publication ban after a judge agreed to bar both police and prosecutors from releasing information about the case.
Per reports, Meng was detained by the Canadian authorities on behalf of the United States, when she was transferring flights in Canada, with unspecified charges in the Eastern District of New York.
The Spokesperson went on that the company has been provided very little information regarding the charges and is not aware of any wrongdoing of Meng.
“The company believes the Canadian and US legal systems will ultimately reach a just conclusion. Huawei complies with all applicable laws and regulations where it operates, including applicable export control and sanction laws and regulations of the UN, US and EU.”
Per claims of the ‘Wall Street Journal’, the United States Justice Department was investigating whether Huawei Company has violated US sanctions on Iran, for which at a query the Canadian Justice Department has declined to comment.
Huawei, a Chinese company which sells smartphones and telecommunications equipment around the world, has been targeted with increased scrutiny in the US and other countries, amid many warnings made by officials that there is a potential national security risk rising from using Huawei products. The United States is concerned that the Chinese government could be using Huawei's networking technology to spy on Americans.
Meng Wanzhou is also the daughter of Founder of Huawei Company Ren Zhengfei.
