8.2 Million Rupees of public currency belonged to Mihin Lanka have reportedly been fraudulently retrieved in rewarding a motor car to Mr. Sumanadasa Abeygunawardena, the chief astrologer of former president Mahinda Rajapakse. Mr. Sumanadasa Abeygunawardena has admitted the allegations before the presidential commission appointed in investigating corruptions of Sri Lankan, Mihin Lanka and Sri Lankan Catering companies yesterday (04).
According to Mr. Abeygunawardena's testimonial, the above money has been retrieved in purchasing a Nissan-N16 motor car in 2007 per instructions of former president Mahinda Rajapakse. He said before the commission that the former president's chief defence officer Major Nevil Wickramarachchi informed him to come to a leasing company located in Rajagiriya, whereas he was given a car key by the relevant officer.
In response to Counsel Chathura Gunathilake on behalf of the Attorney General's Office as to why such vehicle was rewarded to him, the astrologer said that the former president is his close associate. He further testified that he has no knowledge of the previous owner of the vehicle.
Mr. Abeygunawardena went on to say that he acquired the above motor car up till the end of 2014, however was reacquired by the above leasing company with the government collapse in 2015.
The commission has so far unravelled that around 26 motor cars of the above standards have been acquired for the usage of Sri Lankan and Mihin Lanka companies, and as to whether they were actually met with the above companies' usage or were given to third parities was further being investigated by the commission.
