A discussion was held between several ministers and heads of plantation companies today (10) at the Department of Labor in Narahenpita. Plantations Industries Minister Navin Dissanayake, Ceylon Workers’ Congress leader Arumugam Thondaman, Lanka Jathika Estate Workers’ Union General Secretary Vadivel Suresh and Trade Relations and Social Empowerment Minister Daya Gamage were present at the discussion.
The discussion mainly focused on increasing the basic wage of planation workers up to Rs 1,000. Although planation companies stated that plantation workers’ basic wage can be increased up to Rs 940, the ministers pointed out that paying Rs 1,000 per day is possible.
In response, heads of plantation companies said that they will discuss further to reach an agreement in this regard, and inform their decision.
