The Constitution Assembly headed by Deputy Speaker Ananda Kumarasiri convened at 10 am today (11).

The Deputy Speaker announced that there is no obstruction to hold the assembly according to accepted traditions and standing orders.

Prime Minister Ranil Wickremesinghe presented the report prepared by the Panel of Experts for the Steering Committee.

“The assembly convened today only to present the report prepared by the Panel of Experts for the Steering Committee,” the Prime Minister said.

The Prime Minister further added that if the report receives the support of two-thirds of the assembly, the assembly can take a decision on future plans.

Opposition Leader Mahinda Rajapaksa said, “We need a few days to study it, and we have to study reports first in order to hold a debate. We need the opportunity to debate it. Elections have been delayed. People have not been given the chance to express their opinions. Do not do it by deceiving Parliament and people.”
