Govt to obtain USD 1.9 billion to stabilize rupee: PM

Prime Minister Ranil Wickremesinghe today (11) stated that the government plans to obtain USD 1.9 billion from international sources to stabilize the rupee.

Making a special statement in Parliament, he said India’s central bank has agreed to give USD 400 million under the SAARC currency swap program.

The Prime Minister further announced plans to obtain USD 500 million from Chinese Panda bonds and from Samurai bonds in Japan, and USD 1 billion from international money markets.

Finance Minister Mangala Samaraweera will leave for the United States to work on this, he added.
