Conflicting reports have been published by the website dailymirror.lk of the Wijaya Newspapers, with one report initially stating that the Sri Lankan Ambassador to Qatar A.S.P Liyanage has been recalled by President Maithripala Sirisena, whilst another article stated that the Ambassador had tendered his resignation.

Publishing its initial report at 22:52 hours (GMT + 5 1/2) on the 4th of February, the website stated “Sources said President Maithripala Sirisena had dispatched the letter of recall to Mr. Liyanage this evening. Mr. Liyanage was embroiled in controversy recently on charges of trying to take over a Sri Lankan school in Qatar. A parliament debate was held on the matter as well."

However whilst publishing a further story on the same subject a few hours later, the website then carried a headline stating " I was not recalled, I resigned: A.S.P. Liyanage". The report further stated “I sent my resignation letter, and the president accepted it. But I wasn't recalled. I prefer to return to Sri Lanka as soon as I finish my official commitments as a diplomat,” Mr. Liyanage said".

Either way the Sri Lankan expatriate community could not have asked for a better gift on the island nation's 71st Independence Day, than to hear of Ambassador Liyanage's imminent departure to Colombo.

“The last two years have been an absolute hell for all of Sri Lankans living in Doha with President Maithripala Sirisena giving Ambassador a free hand to do as he pleased. Ambassador Liyanage whilst neglecting his Ambassadorial duties chased behind and illegally grabbed the ownership of an independently run Sri Lankan Community School that had been in existence for 17 long years. He sacked and jailed school staff, he recently deprived scores of school children from sitting their first semester exams for non-payment of school fees and more importantly grabbed physical control of over Rs 500 million that lay in the school's bank accounts. He recently funded his daughter's lavish wedding in Colombo from these school funds. He was nothing but a disgrace to humiliated us Sri Lankans who have been living here for so many years peacefully" said a long standing prominent Sri Lankan national on condition of anonymity.

Earlier many Government Minister and MPs had being vocal in parliament regarding the unethical behaviour displayed by Ambassador Liyanage whilst executing his official duties in Qatar.

Ambassador Liyanage retaliating held a press conference in Colombo and went on to ridicule the current ruling government's Deputy Minister Buddhika Pathirana in his defense whilst justifying in actions.
