JVP politburo member K.D. Lalkantha says in the event that the 20th amendment to the Constitution aimed at abolishing the executive presidency is not passed in Parliament, his party will also field a presidential candidate.
If that happens, the next presidential election would be turned into a three-way battle and all other presidential candidates will have to face a huge challenge, he added.
“We are endeavoring to abolish the executive presidency before the next presidential election. We have not given up on passing the 20th amendment to the Constitution in Parliament. If we fail, we will create a three-way battle for the presidential election. We will certainly field one of the leaders of our party as presidential candidate,” he said.
The JVP has a voter base of at least 500,000 and can be a significant force in the next presidential election.
