National Movement for a Just Society Convener Prof. Sarath Wijesuriya says nothing can be expected from the President and Prime Minister, who broke their promises of a new constitution and abolishing the executive presidency. Prof. Wijesuriya is one of the persons who supported the formation of the Yahapalana Government.

He made this statement at a conference held at the Lakshman Kadirgamar Institute in Colombo recently.

If the political leadership doesn’t have a genuine interest, a new constitution cannot be passed, he said adding that both the present leaders don’t have that enthusiasm.

Ranil Wickremesinghe has given up on it, he noted.

Prof. Wijesuriya went on to state that although civil society representatives requested the President and Prime Minister to give an understanding to the public about the new constitution, they didn’t agree.

Maithripala Sirisena misled not only Ven. Sobitha Thero but also minority communities of this country. With support of extremist groups, he is again dreaming about being reelected as the executive president, Prof. Wijesuriya added.
