MP Basil Rajapaksa says a decision on the presidential candidate for the upcoming presidential election will be taken in accordance with Mahinda Rajapaksa’s final decision.
If any legal obstacles arise, he will nominate a suitable person, he added.
Addressing a media briefing held at the Sri Lanka Podujana Peramuna (SLPP) headquarters today (13), he made this statement.
When a journalist asked who would be a suitable presidential candidate other than Rajapaksas, Basil Rajapaksa said Mahinda Rajapaksa will decide it.
He also stated that the membership of SLPP must be obtained to be a candidate, adding that it would not be easy as obtaining party membership requires the recommendation of two persons.
Eventually we have to face an election, so we have to field a candidate who can win, he emphasized.
When journalists questioned whether Basil Rajapaksa will support President Maithripala Sirisena in case the latter decides to contest the upcoming presidential election, he responded that anybody who wishes to contest must obtain party membership.
