National Trade Union Center (NTUC) Convener Wasantha Samarasinghe says NTUC will act against the Counter Terrorism Act (CTA) and will hold discussions with all political parties in future with that regard.
Not long ago leftist political parties, Inter University Students’ Federation (IUSF) and civil activists began expressing strong opposition to the CTA.
Introducing this type of an act to a land where democracy and human rights are upheld is tantamount to oppressing the public, they opined.
Parties opposing the CTA stress that the act proposes to give the police and military an enormous power to inspect, arrest, interrogate and spy on suspects. This act is a substitute for the Prevention of Terrorism Act (PTA).
