President Maithripala Sirisena has met with Bodu Bala Sena (BBS) General Secretary Ven Galagoda Aththe Gnanasara Thero today (18) at the Welikada Prison. The President had reportedly held a secret meeting with Gnanasara Thero.
BBS Executive Director Dilantha Withanage said on social media that the President, who visited Gnanasara Thero in the Welikada Prison hospital, talked with the thero for about 45 minutes. In this private meeting, they may have discussed the current state of the country and injustice faced by Gnanasara Thero, he added.
In the meantime, BBS, issuing a special announcement to BBS activists across the country, requested them to abstain from engaging in any activity or protest which may result in anti-democratic or religious conflicts taking into account the status quo.
In the announcement, BBS said: “BBS is of the opinion that peace is a crucial factor when it comes to the country’s development and defeating all violence and terrorism.”
BBS further said: “We must take necessary action to release Gnanasara Thero and we are responsible for BBS’s official duties in this regard. Please contact us for instructions. May the Triple Gem bless you.”
The announcement, issued by BBS Executive Director Dilantha Withanage, emphasized: “I must tell that there are a number of constitutional and democratic ways to have Gnanasara Thero released and we must apply non-violent methods used by Dharmapala and Gandhi. Certain people, unfortunately, use Gnanasara Thero for political and financial gains.”
