Authorities have chosen two new locations to dump garbage being collected in Colombo city following the collapse of the dump at Meethotamulla.
The new sites are located at Ja Ela and at Karadiyanaru in the boundary between Ratmalana and Piliyandala areas.
However both sites are being opposed by the public, with environmentalists having obtained a court injunction over the Karadiyanaru site and Malcolm Cardinal Ranjith opposing any dumping in Ja Ela.
Meanwhile, deputy minister Harsha de Silva says in a statement that no more garbage will be dumped at Meethotamulla, and also that two new dumping locations have been identified.
Municipal officials say Colombo residents will be in difficulties if no place is found to dispose the nearly 1,000 tons of garbage being collected from the city each day.
Already, garbage is piling up in certain places.
Meanwhile, minister Patali Champika Ranawaka says garbage dumping at Meethotamulla has been suspended with immediate effect.
He blames public opposition to the failure to start proper projects to manage garbage.
