Postal strike begins; activities at a standstill!

Postal workers are staging a 48 hour strike to protest the handover of the main post offices at Colombo Fort, Nuwara Eliya, Galle Fort and postal training college and sorting centre in Kandy to Governor’s Hotels Corporation of India to start tourism hotels.

As a result of this work stoppage, activities at main post offices, sub post offices and estate post offices have come to a complete standstill, say Postal Department sources. The Lanka Postal Services Union says all postal trade unions have become united to successfully hold the strike action from the 12th to the 14th.

It says it will defeat the government plan to curtail the rights of postal workers and to sell properties and offices with a historical value.
