Ex-Navy spokesman Commodore D.K.P. Dassanayake was taken into custody by the CID, reports say. He is accused over the abduction, illegal detention and enforced disappearance of 11 Tamil youths in Colombo in 2008. Colombo Fort magistrate Lanka Jayaratne ordered his arrest, and he was taken at the Navy Hospital at Welisara.
When the case was taken up yesterday, he was named a suspect, while five other Navy officers remain in remand custody.
Didn’t need residential treatment
The CID went to the Navy Hospital and met the doctor treating Dassanayake, and was informed he had no serious illness needing residential treatment. The magistrate also issued an open warrant for the arrest of another suspect, Lt. Commander Prasad Hettiarachchi.
