Roger Federer - the crowning winner of Wimbledon 2017

By Kalendra Withana

And finally the moment that we have all been waiting for. The winner of the 2017 Wimbledon Championships is announced – and the crown goes to Roger Federer!

The 35-year old Swiss player has made Wimbledon history by becoming the first man ever to win the Championships eight times and securing an astonishing 19 Grand Slam titles.

With this 19th title, it is reported that Federer is now in a four-slam lead over Spanish player, Rafael Nadal.

As well as this, the Swiss has also become the first player since Bjorn Borg in 1976 to win a Wimbledon title without dropping a single set.

Playing against Croatia’s Marin Cilic, who was struggling with blisters on his left foot, Federer closed the game by winning 6-3, 6-1, 6-4.

For both of the players, tensions were indeed running abundantly high in what was promised to be a show-stopping final.

Federer was already wary of Cilic being his opponent, being so close to losing to the player in last year’s quarter finals.

The Croatian himself had a head start, holding serve in the opening game of the match and securing a break point in the third game.

However, Cilic then hit a backhand that bounced before the net, showing that his nerves have suddenly caught up with him.

Thus, it seemed that Federer’s luck just originated from this point, with the player demonstrating impressive backhands that had led him to secure an impressive 3-0 in the second set.

The advantage of the game was soon appointed to the Swiss player.

The outcome of this score had resulted in Cilic sadly breaking down in the public eye of Centre Court. During this time, the Croatian was attended to by a doctor and supervisor, as well as the tournament referee.

The Croatian player crying into his towel and being consoled by a member of staff.

Debating whether Cilic was feeling emotional or physical pain at this point in the game, BBC commentator and former Wimbledon champion Boris Becker said:

"That is what this court (Centre Court) does to you”.

"There is no hiding place. Everyone in the world and in Croatia is watching him, and he knows that.”

Before the third set was set to commence, a medical time-out had to be taken for padding to be applied to Cilic’s left foot.

As the final regained its energy again, the score then came to 3-3, with Cilic rising up and netting impressive backhands and forehands.

When serving for his eight Wimbledon title, Federer lost a championship point by displaying an unsuccessful forehand. However, the Swiss managed to make a triumphant U-turn by hitting an ace and thus securing his big win!

The crowds erupted with cheer and glory, and Federer’s team and his family were indeed celebrating.

After the tournament, the Swiss player said: "They come for the finals. It's a wonderful moment for the family and my team.

"This one is for us. Thank you to Wimbledon, thank you Switzerland."

As for Federer’s opponent Cilic, the Croatian player said:

“I gave my best. I had an amazing journey here, played the best tennis of my life. I'm hoping definitely that I'm going to come back and try one more time."
