Chairperson of the National Lotteries Board, senior lawyer Shermila Perera has decided to resign from her position with immediateeffect. Her decision follows a request by deputy leader of the UNP Ravi Karunanayake. The NLB and the Development Lotteries Board that had functioned under the Finance Ministry was brought under the Foreign Ministry by special gazette after Karunanayake took over that portfolio. Following his resignation, the cabinet decided to return both institutions to the Finance Ministry.
Shermila Perera was the personal secretary to the late Lalith Athulathmudali and is a long term activist of the UNP.
At the prime minister’s request, finance minister Mangala Samaraweera is due to appoint president’s counsel Nissanka Nanayakkara as the new NLB chief. Nanayakkara has been the legal secretary of the UNP for a long time.
