There is a suggestion that president Maithripala Sirisena could be impeached for failing to fulfill his election promise to abolish the executive presidency. On a proposal by UNP leaders, the Mahinda Rajapaksa led joint opposition that is opposed to the SLFP has agreed to support such a move, reliable sources say.
Members of the two sides met recently to discuss the matter.
Meanwhile, SLFP leaders in the government too, have expressed support to impeach the president for his not directly supporting the party line with regard to a constitutional amendment and expelling leading members from the party.
UNP’s legal experts and political pundits are yet to make a firm view, as they are considering the pros and cons of moving an impeachment motion against the president.
