Politicians asked not to influence election

Election commission chairman Mahinda Deshapriya asks government ministers to refrain from attending opening of development projects that will influence the local government election. Such functions could take place with the participation of public servants only, he notes.

At previous elections, the then governments were accused of distributing goods to influence public opinion and of misusing public properties. Deshapriya says everyone should act responsibly to prevent a recurrence.

Already, he has received complaints of allocation of funding for road development and goods distributions to voters.
