Mahinda demands opposition leader position - UPDATE 5
With the results of the LG polls announced, Mahinda Rajapaksa was invited by president Maithripala Sirisena to accept the premiership. Rajapaksa has turned it down and has demanded the opposition leader position and to recognize the joint opposition, reports say. Websites with links to him say he is not prepared to accept the PM position that has come his way by chance.
SLPP national organizer Basil Rajapaksa says the government will have to bow to the public opinion and go for a general election. The SLPP is clearly ahead in the LG polls, with the UNP in second position and the UPFA third, and in some LG bodies it has polled less votes than the JVP to gain the fourth position.
