Management committee to regulate Samurdhi Banks
Central Bank governor Indrajit Coomaraswamy told the media yesterday (11) that a management committee would be appointed to better regulate Samurdhi Banks under a long term programme along with the Finance Ministry.
The secretary to the economic affairs ministry is to be appointed chairman of this committee. However, there is stiff opposition to the move, with allegations that the government, after swindling the CB, was now after the deposits of Samurdhi beneficiaries. The Samurdhi development and agricultural research development officers association warns of island wide protests if the Samurdhi Banks were taken over by the CB. It alleges the government was trying to swindle the deposits as it had no money to run the economy.
