The Sri Lankan Golf Union (SLGU), the governing body for Golf in Sri Lanka, together with HSBC will host the International Junior Golf Championship between Sri Lanka, Pakistan, India, Malaysia and Thailand for the second successive year. It will be held at the Royal Colombo Golf Club on 1 and 2 August. It was introduced by the SLGU.
“We are delighted to be once again having with us junior internationals from Pakistan, India, Malaysia and Thailand for the HSBC International Junior Golf Championship. We hope that they will enjoy our country and gain as much from playing this tournament in Sri Lanka as our juniors undoubtedly will from this experience,” newly elected President of Sri Lanka Golf Union Air Chief Marshal Mr.Harsha Abeywickrama said.
HSBC will be the title sponsor of the championship. The bank sponsors many global golf championships such as HSBC WGC Golf Championship in Shanghai, HSBC Women’s Championship in Singapore and The Open in UK.
All current junior golf players in the country will have the opportunity to participate in the HSBC Junior Golf Championship. Individual events categorized into age groups will be held on the 1st August.
On the 2nd day, International Junior Golf Team Championship for the SLGU Trophy will be conducted by the Golf Union. The terms of the match will be on a format structured on a hybrid version of similar international team events such as the Asia Pacific Golf Team Championship and the Ryder Cup in the USA.
HSBC will also partner the SLGU in promoting the ‘Future Lions’ programme which will be conducted in parallel with the main international event. This will be open to kids aged between 8 – 13 years and will be held in Hambantota, Diyatalawa and Trincomalee.
Mark Prothero, CEO of HSBC Sri Lanka and Maldives stated that the winners of the HSBC Junior Open and HSBC Premier Junior will be given two passes for the prestigious 148th edition of The Open scheduled at Royal Portrush in Northern Ireland in 2019.
The HSBC Junior International Gold Championship is supported by several partners. Cinnamon Life has come forward as the hospitality partner for the event and will host all the international teams.
