Health minister Rajitha Senaratne says he is surprised over Sri Lankan doctors’ refusal to prescribe a cancer drug that has been approved by the US drug authority.
Addressing a world elders’ day ceremony at Aluthgama stadium, he said that since only one brand had been registered for use, he had introduced a Russian drug following a clinical analysis.
However, certain Sri Lankan doctors say the Russian drug is not good, and even gave bribes not to recommend more alternatives, he charged.
The Rs. two billion a year spending on the importation of this breast cancer drug has been halved following the introduction of the Russian drug, he said.
Senaratne added that he would work without being intimidated by the drug mafia.
