UNP MP Ananda Kumarasiri was appointed yesterday (5) for the position of Deputy Speaker of Parliament. For this position, SLFP MP Sudarshani Fernandopulle’s name was also proposed along with Ananda Kumarasiri’s.
As agreed by UNP and SLFP when the Good Governance government came to power in 2015, Speaker position was given to UNP and the Deputy Speaker position was given to SLFP. Thilanga Sumathipala was appointed as the Deputy Speaker. However, recently he left the government and subsequently resigned from the position of Deputy Speaker.
TNA opposes Angajan
Thereafter, the President nominated UPFA national list MP Angajan Ramanadan and UNP backed it. But TNA spoke against appointing Angajan Ramanadan as Deputy Speaker, although TNA did not have a valuable reason. TNA should have been happy about this.
Insincere politics in the North
Angajan Ramanadan is a young politician who studied at Melbourne University in Australia. Because of that, traditional and matured leaders consider him a challenge. Political leaders in the North believe that any person who enters politics from North must comply with their own politics. They attempt to discourage politicians who do not agree with their political values. Prabhakaran tried to do the same by taking weapons into hands and other Tamil leaders followed other methods, and it is still happening.
TNA leaders think that TNA is the only people’s representative in the North and any person who is entering politics from the North must be a TNA member. However, several new political groups have started their political campaigns in the North and they are attracting people. These groups include young politicians who do not accept TNA’s traditional politics and they have become a great challenge to TNA.
The Prime Minister Ranil Wickramasinghe spoke about TNA’s politics at the parliament and he said that because of TNA’s resistance, a young Tamil politician lost a fine opportunity.
UNP – TNA agreements
TNA leader R.Sambandhan has told UNP to prevent Angajan Ramanadan from becoming the Deputy Speaker, if the government wants TNA’s support further. If for some reason SLFP decides to leave the government, UNP’s only alternative is TNA. Therefore, UNP had to agree with TNA’s demand and as a result, Angajan was not nominated for the position of Deputy Speaker.
Joint Opposition, who wanted to take the advantage of this situation, proposed the name of SLFP’s Group of 16 member Sudarshani Fernandopulle. However, since UNP proposed the name of Ananda Kumarasiri for the position, a member of the government became the Deputy Speaker.
