President Maithripala Sirisena yesterday went to the home of former President Mahinda Rajapaksa in Medamulana to pay last respects to Chandra Rajapaksa, the youngest brother of the Rajpaksa family. This event attracted special attention yesterday, and photos of Maithripala Sirisena and Rajapaksa brothers were circulated on the internet.
Even though this meeting took place due to a funeral, there was another story behind this.
It is no secret that the connection between Maithripala Sirisena and Mahinda Rajapaksa was damaged after the 2015 presidential election. Even though they say that there are no permanent friends and enemies in politics, no one can say there are no disputes at all.
However, when Priyantha Sirisena alias Weli Raja, the brother of President Maithripala Sirisena, passed away, former President Mahinda Rajapaksa had come to pay his last respects. But Maithripala Sirisena did not attend it due to the improper conduct of his brother. But Mahinda Rajapaksa had attended the funeral.
And about a year ago, the funeral of former President's sister, Gandhini Rajapaksa, was held in Mirihana. President Maithripala Sirisena did not come to the funeral. However, everyone’s attention has been drawn to the President’s trip to Weeraketiya to attend Chandra Rajapaksa’s funeral.
However, information reveals that this meeting took place in order to create a certain connection between the present President and Rajapaksa. It has been reported that former minister S.B. Dissanayake acted as the bridge that connects them. The President has made an interesting suggestion to Mahinda Rajapaksa through S.B. Dissanayake. He had said that he is hoping to contest for presidency in 2020, and needs the support of the entire Sri Lanka Freedom Party (SLFP) for it. The President had stated that he will give the post of Prime Minister to Mahinda Rajapaksa for his support.
Mr. Dissanayake had delivered this proposal to the former President. In response, Mahinda Rajapaksa had stated that he does not believe Maithripala Sirisena. The former President had further said that he cannot believe Maithripala Sirisena when he looks at the way he treats the UNP leader who made a huge sacrifice to make Maithripala Sirisena the President.
However, more changes, suggestions and complaints will be exchanged in the future. The unexpected meeting between President Maithripala Sirisena and Rajapaksa may steer the political situation in the country to a new path.
