Chief of Defense Staff Ravindra Wijegunaratne has yesterday (19) returned to Sri Lanka. He left for Mexico on 10 September to attend Mexico’s Independence Day as a special representative of the President.
He travelled overseas when he had been informed to appear before the Criminal Investigation Department (CID) to record a statement. Ignoring the notice, Mr. Wijegunaratne traveled to Mexico and the President was aware of it.
Chief of Defense Staff has been accused of harboring Chandana Prasad Hettiarachchi alias Navy Sampath, a major suspect of the abduction and disappearance of 11 youths during the former government’s time. He had been summoned by the CID to record a statement with regard to this incident.
In the meantime, media had reported that Mr. Ravindra Wijegunaratne has requested protection from the USA. However, he has returned, proving that those allegations are false. We reported on 15 September that those news were untrue.
