Former Sri Lankan Ambassador in Russia Udayanga Weerathunga, who was alleged to have misused 7.833 Million US Dollars accounting to long argued MiG deal, was arrested in Dubai and was tirelessly backed by the Sri Lankan Yahapalana Government to deliver back to Sri Lanka under the extradition law.

The Interpol had informed the Sri Lankan Government to send them the extradition papers of Mr. Weerathunga in considering his safe passage back to Sri Lanka.

Although his papers were sent to the Defence Ministry by the Attorney General’s Department following the procedure, former Defence Secretary Kapila Vaidyaratne has kept the papers in a ministry locker without submitting them to the Interpol.

The folder was discovered in a ministry locker recently as per an investigation carried in seeking the disappeared papers.

Apparently, the Government has spent public’s money in opening up the safe passageway to Mr. Udayanga Weerathunga twice amid a situation his extradition papers were not even sent to the Interpol.
