Certain SLPP political agents in the past 54 days acted as they want using political powers amidst the political crisis. Such news was reported to Lanka News Web from Mirissa tourist area in Matara.
Several persons including Kanchana Wijesekara had reportedly started demanding ransoms in the area. They had collected money from businessmen in Mirissa using their political powers.
After learning about this, Sagala Rathnayake had gone to the area in question and discussed the current situation in accordance with powers vested in him by the Southern Development Authority. He had issued orders to continue their work without being affected by those who demand ransom.
However, the situation had not changed. Although Sagala Rathnayake opposed the above gang, his followers continued the business started by the SLPP.
Accordingly, Southern Province Council member Gayan Sanjeewa and his acquaintances had continued to demand ransoms. Gayan Sanjeewa’s secretary had told businessmen in the above tourist area to give Rs 75,000 per month to Gayan Sanjeewa’s foundation.
In response, they had been told that it is possible to pay even Rs 100,000, but the businessmen must be allowed to continue their businesses without obstacles.
Despite Sagala Rathnayake’s instructions, his followers continue to demand ransoms.
