A very secret meeting decisive for major political turning points has been taken place between Prime Minister Ranil Wickremesinghe and founder of Sri Lanka Podujana Peramuna (SLPP) Basil Rajapaksa last Wednesday (13) at the residence of Mr. Niraj Wickremesinghe.
Mr. Niraj Wickremesinghe is the younger brother of Prime Minister Ranil Wickremesinghe.
Keeping up with the reports, the discussion that went on one-to-one was focused on major hot topics such as the 2020 Presidential Election, the Presidential Candidate of SLPP, the prevailing political situation in the country and its future.
Following the secret meeting, President Maithripala Sirisena and Opposition Leader Mahinda Rajapaksa apparently have given their special attention into the matter. Mr. Mahinda Rajapaksa was nervous learning of the meeting and has been warned by his closest associates to be on alert of his brother, accusing him to be having a suspicious behaviour.
Rajapaksa cold wars
Mr. Mahinda Rajapaksa is reportedly in a moderate confusion that his brother Basil has skipped many of the party priorities over the last period, as he shared with his associates. What we learned so far is that there is an opinion battle between the four Rajapaksa brothers on accounts to the 2020 Presidential Candidate and the alliance SLPP is proposed to have with the United People’s Freedom Alliance (UPFA) led by President Maithripala Sirisena.
Closest friends to the Rajapaksa family believe that the opinion of former First Lady Shiranthi Rajapaksa would be critical and decisive of what is to come in the political arena.
Our sources closest to the Rajapaksa family and President Sirisena’s family informed that Mrs. Rajapaksa has tendency to despise her sisters in law to be seen as first ladies, and would never allow either of the Rajapaksa brothers, Gotabhaya, Chamal or Basil, to contest in the upcoming Presidential Election. She views that Mr. Maithripala Sirisena shall be the Presidential Candidate, and having him won, her husband Mahinda Rajapaksa should be the Prime Minister.
Behind the curtains of the wedding
Mrs. Shiranthi Rajapaksa has shared the confidence she has for President Sirisena for a successful political future with one of his closest and senior officials at the wedding of her youngest son Rohitha Rajapaksa. He was introduced to Mrs. Rajapaksa by an associate of Mr. Mahinda Rajapaksa, whereas she was much pleased and responded that the President is much close to them, they all are now in the same side and the journey shall be continued together.
Her response and confidence on the President has been immediately informed to President Sirisena.
In keeping with the sources, it is this motive that drove Mr. Basil Rajapaksa to nominate an independent candidate for the upcoming Presidential Election from the SLPP, to which by chance Mr. Mahinda Rajapaksa may nominate President Sirisena as the next candidate. Because Mr. Basil Rajapaksa is in a firm stance that Mr. Maithripala Sirisena has no capacity to win the 2020 Presidential Election.
Mr. Basil Rajapaksa has told his companions that if President Sirisena is nominated for the elections and is defeated, it would be lethal to the party in the upcoming General Election.
The controversial statement—made by Mr. Basil Rajapaksa on Wednesday (13) that a member of the SLPP will be sworn in as the new President of Sri Lanka—followed by a secret meeting with Prime Minister Wickremesinghe turns out to be politically rather confusing to many people. However, political analysts point out that the two acts prove well that their family conflicts before seeking Presidential Candidacy have grown in a burning scale.
They also point out that in the face of this, Mr. Mahinda Rajapaksa is looking for answers, and the only getaway to end the power struggle within his family and to secure the political future of his son Namal Rajapaksa is to secure Maithripala Sirisena's victory in the Presidential Candidacy to consolidate his own political future.
A secret note following October crisis
Meanwhile, Mr. Basil Rajapaksa’s behaviour during which Mr. Mahinda Rajapaksa was appointed as the Prime Minister by President Sirisena on October 26, 2018 has specially been taken into attention by the President and the Opposition Leader. According to our sources, during the same days, Mr. Basil Rajapaksa had informed Prime Minister Ranil Wickremesinghe and Dr. Rajitha Senaratne through a special messenger that he does not support the cause because he could not approve what has happened.
It is also said that he had made a double check whether the secret message was delivered to the Prime Minister and Dr. Senaratne.
Sources associated with the President’s office said that parliamentarians like Rishard Bathiudeen and Rauf Hakeem decided not to join with the coup due to this very reason, the secret message!
