Lanka News Web earlier reported that the investigations into the abduction and killing of two businessmen in Rathgama, Bussa, may be affected by Senior DIG Ravi Wijegunawardena being in active service. He was in charge of the Southern province special investigations unit involved in this incident.
The Senior DIG had informed all police stations in Galle to submit a report on the crimes of the two businessmen, Manjula Asela and Rashin Chinthaka. The DIG in charge of the area giving his approval to this activity had ordered all police stations to prepare the aforementioned report immediately, and submit it to Senior DIG Ravi Wijegunawardena as soon as possible.
Although police stations in Galle failed to conduct any investigation into the abduction of the two businessmen for over a month, they are now actively looking for crimes committed by the two businessmen. Put simply, the police are now investigating the characters of the murdered, instead of searching for murderers. This is clearly an unnecessary interference.
Ravi Gunawardena issued theses orders to police stations in Galle after being transferred to the Police Headquarters.
In the meantime, two newspapers published news items yesterday (27) in a manner that implies that these two businessmen were involved in crimes and the Senior DIG is not involved in the incident.
What is happening here, actually, is what the Sri Lanka Police has been doing for a long time – the same disgraceful process of justifying murders by showing that the murdered are criminals.
We therefore reiterate that the aforementioned Senior DIG must be sent on compulsory leave at least until further actions are taken.
