The Sri Lanka Podujana Peramuna (SLPP) is reportedly being engaged in a political conspiracy against Minister of Power, Energy and Business Development Ravi Karunanayake with Lanka Transformers Limited (LTL) in seeking political advantage amid the national power crisis.

In keeping with the sources, Executive Finance Director Ravindra Pitigala and Deputy Chief Executive M.J.M.N. Marikkar of the LTL have secretly met SLPP Kandy Parliamentarian Mahindananda Aluthgamage at his Colombo residence late Thursday (28). The meeting was reportedly conducted in gaining instruments that benefit the political attack against Minister Ravi Karunanayake. Therefore, it is obvious that leader of National Freedom Front (NFF) Parliamentarian Wimal Weerawansa and Parliamentarian Mahindananda Aluthgamage shamelessly accused the Government and Minister Karunanayake on last Friday (29) in the chambers under the influence of Mr. Ravindra Pitigala and Mr. M.J.M.N. Marikkar.

Sources associated with the President's Office confirmed us that their internal information files a strong suite that the conspiracy against the Minister of Power, Energy and Business Development is being backed up by none other than Minister of Megapolis & Western Development Patali Champika Ranawaka.

According to reports, Ministers Patali Champika Ranawaka and Sagala Rathnayake is closely associated with the LTL, their Chairman U.D. Jayawardena, Executive Finance Director Ravindra Pitigala and Deputy Chief Executive M.J.M.N Marikkar. Friendship between Mr. Pitigala and Minister Rathnayake runs back to school days, and their political campaigns have been sponsored by LTL as well.

Speaker Karu Jayasuriya was the Minister of Power and Energy during the United National Party Government of 2001 - 2004, whereas an unacceptable amount of money allocated for the the LTL by the Ceylon Electricity Board (CEB) claimed for project activities had been suspended for release.

Mr. Sagala Rathnayake was the Deputy Minister of Power and Energy back then!

Mr. Rathnayake had taken the advantage of a one-time absence of Mr. Karu Jayasuriya due to a foreign visit, to release the above money to his pal's company, obtaining his authority as the acting Minister of Power and Energy, with the help of Prime Minister Ranil Wickremesinghe.

Political campaigns of Minister Patali Champika Ranawaka are also being backed by the LTL, and in keeping with the sources, he was supported by the same company for the modernization of his residence as well.

The special presidential committee appointed by President Maithripala Sirisena in investigating the irregularities caused in the plan to construct a dual air powerplant with a capacity of 300 megawatts at Kerawalapitiya area per long term planning of the CEB was heavily opposed for having Minister Ranawaka included into the committee by the National Movement for Consumer Rights Protection due to the same reason.

"Lakdanavi", a subsidiary of the LTL, had announced tenders for the project, while the LTL holds 63% of the CEB stake. Although the 63% of the CEB is being owned by the LTL, no profit earned either by the LTL or its subsidiaries are shared with the CEB, while all governmental auditing against the companies are halted by their authorities as well.

During the parliamentary debate on power crisis held on April 04, 2016, Janatha Vimukthi Peramuna (JVP) Parliamentarian Sunil Handunnetti had raised the issue on the same basis, commenting that the CEB faces losses and the LTL and its subsidiaries with a stake of 63% are gaining excessive profit, and that income and assets of the directors of its subsidiaries such as Esot Limited shall immediately be investigated.
