Minister of Megapolis and Western Development Champika Ranawaka has told some of his close acquaintances recently that if he cannot become the presidential candidate of the United National Front (UNF), he will contest the upcoming presidential election independently.

He has already started a massive presidential election campaign by himself. His cutouts are being displayed at the government’s expense near development projects in Colombo and suburbs.

What’s more, he has appointed coordinators for each district and seat, and they are getting huge salaries. Main election committees have also been appointed, and some members are paid Rs 800,000 monthly, while some are paid Rs 300,000. His representatives have been appointed to leading media institutions and their monthly salaries range from Rs 80,000 to 150,000.

However, certain ministers of the United National Party (UNP) have expressed opposition to offering his ministry some very important duties which previously belonged to other ministries.
