State Minister of Transport Ashok Abeysinghe has expressed opposition to removing Department of Motor Traffic (DMT) Commissioner General Jagath Chandrasiri from his post.

Ashok Abeysinghe recently criticized DMT Commissioner General’s corrupt activities and reportedly, having to give a bribe to resolve a problem with regard to one of minister’s vehicles, is the reason behind it.

The Commissioner ignoring the State Minister, due to the close relationship between the Commissioner and former Cabinet Minister, is another reason. Wasana Traders Director Sampath Merenchige intervened to resolve this issue and gave a sum of Rs 5 million.

Later the Commissioner took action to give Rs 1 million monthly, and also collected money from different parties and gave Deputy Minister the money monthly. The Minister opposed the transfer because if the Commissioner General was transferred, he would lose his monthly income. However, Minister Arjuna Ranatunga has taken a definite decision to transfer the Commissioner General due to accusations leveled against the latter in parliament.
