Investigations launched into allegations against several corrupt officers, including Motor Traffic Department Commissioner Jagath Chandrasiri, have been halted using the current state of national security and the government’s attention being paid for other matters as a reason.

The investigations have been halted by L.M. Jayampathi, Secretary to the Ministry of Transport, and he had been reportedly paid a large sum of money by Metropolitan and Access companies.

It is reported that these two companies, Metropolitan and Access, and foreign companies working with them, are intervening in the operations of the Department of Motor Traffic as well.

Investigations were launched against them after MPs of both the government and opposition accused them of corruption.

Employees of the Department of Motor Traffic allege that Jagath of Metropolitan has started intervening in internal transfers of the department as well.

They further say that applications submitted from outside of Colombo for the purpose of obtaining driving licenses are being misused to issue fake driving licenses and several licenses under the same name. This is a very serious situation, especially due to the current state of security in the country, they added.
