Preet Bharara the US prosecutor who accused Sri Lankan Businessman dismissed
After a careful review of Mr. Bharara’s activities, President Donald Trump, added Preet Bharara, U.S. Attorney for the Southern District of New York, to the 45 long list of Attorneys to be removed from the Department of Justice. This sudden turn of events rocked the Legal world because Mr. Bharara had impressed the President at a meeting in November 2016 that he was carrying out some investigations into some ‘High Profile’ individuals, resulting in the President letting him stay on as a US Attorney indefinitely. By all accounts the decision was taken in a very short time and the decision communicated to Mr. Bharara just before New York closing on the same day, 10th March 2017.
Using a loop hole Under US law where the Law Enforcement authorities in the USA do not even have to record a statement from suspects giving their side of the story before any accusations or indictments are brought, Bharara filed Indictments left and right, especially against many high profile individuals including a Sri Lankan Businessman and Investor Recently, using the resultant media blitz to fuel his ambitions to run for the New York Governorship in 2018.
According to a study conducted by Mr. Ronald C Huff, Director of the Criminal Justice Research Center and the School of Public Policy and Management at Ohio State University, Professor Arye Rattner, professor of sociology at the University of Haifa, Israel and the late Edward Sagarin, who was a professor of sociology at City College and City University of New York, as much as 10,000 people per annum are wrongfully convicted in the USA for serious crimes. These findings have been published in a book ‘Convicted but Innocent: Wrongful Conviction and Public Policy (Sage Publications, 1996)’.
The Innocence Project an NGO committed to saving victims of wrongful convictions have so far saved 349 innocent persons, from Jail or worse, some after having wrongfully served 30 to 35 years in prison and their lives destroyed permanently. Needless say their work has been limited to those who are innocent and had managed to stay a live due to pending appeals against execution.
Legal sources in New York stated that ‘hopefully the era of Indicting people for personal gain has now come to an end. People from all parts of the world irrespective of their, color, race and creed must be allowed to participate in their legitimate business activities without fear of unnecessary Prosecution’.
