Fonseka entrusted with disciplining Sri Lanka

President Maithripala Sirisena proposed to the cabinet at its meeting yesterday (25) that a special programme should be implemented to provide relief to the public and to halt authoritarian, extremist, sabotaging acts by a minority of trade unions in various fields that misuse the democratic freedom given by the ‘Yahapaalana’ government and repress the public. The cabinet unanimously approved his proposal.

The president has proposed that former Army commander, cabinet minister, Field Marshal Sarath Fonseka should be entrusted with carrying out that task. That too, was unanimously approved.

Less than 1,500 had taken part in yesterday’s petroleum sector strike, and they had tried to sabotage the entire institutional mechanism, but were thwarted in the attempt by the mediation of the three armed forces. Such incidents can recur in the future, and alternatives measures that can be taken should be studied and implemented by Fonseka, who will be empowered to do so through a special gazette notification.

Fonseka too, agreed with the cabinet proposal. A special discussion in this regard was due to take place between him and the president tonight, reports say.
