Prisons commissioner’s term extended by 2 yrs
With just two weeks left in his term, the prison reforms and rehabilitation ministry has decided to give prisons commissioner Gamini Jayasinghe two more years in office.
Jayasinghe is a key witness in the 2012 murder of 27 inmates at Welikada prison. As the prison riot was underway, the then Magazine prison superintendent Emil Ranjan Lamahewa took Jayasinghe out of the prison, although the latter refused to leave at a time of trouble.
The CID has also revealed details of involvement of Brig. Shantha Dissanayake in the killings. While investigations are underway, only a handful of those responsible have been arrested.
