US $ 6.7 million to be paid for the Chinese organic fertilizer ship today

0

It is reported that a sum of US $ 6.7 million is to be paid today (07) for the Chinese organic fertilizer ship in question.

People’s Bank says that the money will be paid to the Chinese company due to the removal of the enjoining order imposed by the Colombo Commercial High Court.

The Ministry of Agriculture Mahindananda Aluthgamage has stated that this amount will be paid as per an agreement reached between the Ministry of Agriculture and the relevant Chinese organic fertilizer company and that the company has agreed to supply quality fertilizer.

Payments for the fertilizer ship had been suspended due to a sample test conducted by the Plant Quarantine Service in Sri Lanka. However, later tests in a foreign laboratory revealed that it did not contain harmful bacteria.

SLFP will contest any forthcoming election in a new alliance – Rohana

0

The Sri Lanka Freedom Party (SLFP) will contest any forthcoming election in a new alliance, said the party’s senior vice president, Prof. Rohana Lakshman Piyadasa.

“They would not have won this presidential election without our 1.7 – 1.8 million votes. Even so, this government has not yet begun a broad dialogue with the fraternal parties for more than two years. When those dialogues broke down, the life span of the government began to decline. We say that our past experience is the same and that our present experience is going in the same direction.

The fraternal parties are even going to a separate court as they have not received justice. There is a political complexity in the country.

In this situation, the SLFP is practically organizing the people at the village level and at the grassroots level. Whatever the forthcoming election, we are working to get the SLFP to come forward through a new alliance. ”

Prof. Rohana Lakshman Piyadasa stated this addressing a media briefing held in Kandy yesterday (06).

Is P.B. going to change his mind on the resignation?

0

Secretary to the President PB Jayasundara submitted his resignation letter to President Gotabhaya Rajapaksa last December. Jayasundera has not reported for duty at the Presidential Secretariat since December 27th after the President accepted his resignation. He was at his home in Nikaweratiya, Kurunegala.

However, sources from the Presidential Secretariat said that PB Jayasundera had visited the Presidential Secretariat yesterday (06) and held a special meeting while President Gotabhaya Rajapaksa was on a visit to Kandy.

Jayasundera had summoned a group of Ministry Secretaries, a group of Additional Secretaries to the President’s Office as well as a group of retired Ministry Secretaries to the meeting held yesterday, where he had not given a word of resignation. On the contrary, various orders have been issued to these officers indicating that they will continue in office for a longer period.

The secretaries who were present during the meeting were confused about this and after the meeting, they have been discussing what is going on.

P.B. Jayasundera had informed the President in his resignation letter that he was retiring from January 31. But he was not at least present at the inauguration of the new year at the Presidential Secretariat, which was presided over by the President, on January 3. Meanwhile, the President has instructed his senior advisor Lalith Weeratunga to ask P.B. Jayasundera to resign on January 15 and not January 31. It is reported that the President has asked P.B. Jayasundara to resign from his post as he wants to appoint Gamini Senarath as the new Secretary and move forward. It is reported that Lalith Weeratunga has also given the same message to Jayasundera.

However, sources from the Presidential Secretariat said that Jayasundera had shown by his behavior yesterday that he did not want to resign.

In fact, P.B. Jayasundera had said on several previous occasions that he would resign, but he did not resign. On one previous occasion, he had even sent a letter of resignation to the President. But he did not resign. Accordingly, rumors are circulating in the political arena that P.B. will not leave this time as well.

During his recent stay in Kurunegala, P.B. Jayasundara had boasted in a newspaper stating that he would not be taking up any other government post and would write a book about his experience. But we must not forget that power is not something that can be easily abandoned by anyone.

Jayasundera, who has continued to exercise the highest level of government power since the tenure of Chandrika Bandaranaike, lost that position only during the period of Yahapalana Government in 2015-2019. Apart from that, he lived with the highest level of state power for about two decades. It is unknown at this time what he will do after leaving the post.

A 50-year Agreement signed with IOC for Trincomalee Oil Tank Project

An agreement was signed yesterday (06) with a new company to be set up to develop the Trincomalee oil tank complex as a joint venture with India.

S.R. Attygalle, Secretary to the Ministry of Finance, Sumith Wijesinghe, Chairman of the Ceylon Petroleum Corporation, Buddhika Madigahewa, Managing Director of the Ceylon Petroleum Corporation and Manoj Gupta, Managing Director of the Ceylon Indian Oil Company signed on behalf of the Government of Sri Lanka.

The new agreement nullifies the 35-year agreement on the Trincomalee tanks, which was signed in 2003 and will be divided into 99 tanks for the next 50 years as follows:

  1. Lanka IOC – 14 fuel tanks
  2. Ceylon Petroleum Corporation – 24 tanks
  3. The Trincomalee Petroleum Terminal Company, which was formed by the Ceylon Petroleum Corporation and the Ceylon IOC with a 51% – 49% stake, – 61 oil tanks.

Udaya Gammanpila, Minister of Energy says that under the new agreement, Sri Lanka was able to take control of 85 of the 99 oil tanks, which is a historic victory. The Opposition alleges that Minister Gammanpila has given the oil tanks back to India for another 50 years which could have been acquired by Sri Lanka soon. Also, the Indian media last week questioned how the Ceylon Petroleum Corporation, which has already called it a joint venture or has no money to invest in crude oil, could invest in it.

Ministers G.L. Peiris, Dinesh Gunawardena and Sarath Weerasekara are likely to be removed from their ministerial portfolios in the upcoming Cabinet Reshuffle, sources closer to the government disclosed.

Sources added that Peiris is likely to be appointed as the next Speaker as he had informed the top government leaders that he cannot hold his ministerial post.

The Ministry of Public Security currently held by Weerasekara, who is already at the centre of many troubles due to his conduct, is likely to be pinned to Dilum Amunugama, who is currently serving as the State Minister of Community Police Services.

D.V. Chanaka, another state minister, is also believed to be sworn in as a Cabinet Minister, sources added.

The Agriculture Ministry currently borne by Mahindananda Aluthgamage will also be taken back and given to Prasanna Ranatunga.

We previously reported that the Cabinet Reshuffle may likely to be held on January 10 instead of 12, but latest reports claim that it will inevitably be taking place on or before January 12 given that there is no auspicious time after the 12th.

But the tables could be turned in the last moment making the reshuffle into something previously unheard of, sources added.
