Prime Minister Ranil Wickramasinghe says that the government will set up 500 sports centers in 500 selected schools island wide.
He made this statement yesterday (1) at the opening ceremony of 34th All Island School Games at the Sugathadasa Stadium, Colombo.
The Prime Minister further stated that abovementioned sports centers will be set up within the next three to four years with the aim of paving the way for school athletes to go from school games to win international gold medals.
Sri Lanka received the opportunity to send many athletes to Asian Games in Indonesia. Attendance will not be adequate, athletes must strive for victory, he added.
Speaking at the event, Education Minister Akila Viraj Kariyawasam stated that then Education Minister Ranil Wickramasinghe commenced All Island School Games in 1984.
Even if students fail all nine OL subjects, if they are talented in athletics, they will be offered the opportunity to obtain AL and university education through an island wide program which will be implemented from next year onward, he added.
