GMOA Ends Two-Day Token Strike, Signals Further Action Ahead

January 25, Colombo (LNW): The Government Medical Officers’ Association (GMOA) has called off its 48-hour island-wide token strike, which came to an end at 8.00 a.m. today (25).

The association confirmed that routine hospital services have since returned to normal across the country.

The temporary stoppage of work was described by the GMOA as the opening move in a broader campaign of trade union action. The protest was launched in response to what the association says is the slow implementation of assurances previously given by the Minister of Health, particularly in relation to long-standing concerns affecting medical professionals and the wider hospital system.

Following the conclusion of the strike, outpatient and daily treatment services resumed without restriction from this morning, easing disruptions experienced over the past two days.

However, the association made it clear that the industrial dispute is far from over. The GMOA stated that further island-wide action remains on the table, with decisions on the form and timing of future measures to be taken at a special meeting of its executive council scheduled for later today.
