Sri Lanka has reached a major milestone in its irrigation sector with the successful completion of excavation work on South Asia’s longest irrigation tunnel.

The 27.7-kilometre tunnel, constructed under the North Central Province Canal Project, is a key component of the long-standing Mahaweli Master Plan and is expected to significantly enhance the country’s irrigation infrastructure.

The newly completed tunnel is scheduled to be officially opened today (15), marking a new chapter in Sri Lanka’s water management and agricultural development efforts.

The project forms part of the broader Mahaweli development programme aimed at improving water distribution, strengthening irrigation systems and supporting agricultural productivity in the North Central Province and surrounding regions.
