July 06, Colombo (LNW): The number of fatalities linked to renewed violence at Negombo Prison has increased to 25, police confirmed on Sunday morning (6), as authorities continue efforts to restore full control of the facility.
According to preliminary information, the deceased include five prison officers and 20 inmates. The incident has also left at least 100 people injured, with several reported to be in serious condition.
Security forces remain deployed inside and around the prison as investigations continue into the circumstances that triggered the latest escalation. Officials have not yet released further details on the sequence of events, but the situation is understood to have developed following earlier tensions within the facility.
