July 06, Colombo (LNW): Tensions flared once again at Negombo Prison today (06) after fresh disturbances broke out, prompting security personnel to intervene in an effort to restore order.
According to reports, several prison officers sustained injuries during the latest bout of unrest. Police and Special Task Force (STF) personnel were deployed to the prison, with video footage circulating on social media showing security forces working to bring the situation under control.
The renewed violence follows a serious confrontation that erupted inside the prison on Saturday between groups of remand and convicted inmates. The clash claimed the lives of two prisoners and left 38 others injured, making it one of the most significant incidents reported at the facility in recent times.
Although prison authorities had managed to stabilise the situation by Sunday morning, tensions reportedly resurfaced later in the day, leading to another round of disturbances.
Officials are expected to carry out further investigations into the incidents, while additional security measures are likely to remain in place to prevent any further escalation inside the prison.
