July 14, Colombo (LNW): Sri Lanka has secured a place among the world’s 50 leading food tourism destinations for 2026, earning international recognition for its distinctive cuisine and rich culinary heritage in the latest rankings published by Travel And Tour World (TTW).

The annual editorial list highlights countries that continue to shape global food tourism through authentic dining experiences, culinary innovation and strong cultural traditions. The rankings were compiled by TTW’s editorial team after assessing factors such as traditional food culture, regional specialities, street food, fine dining, sustainability, locally sourced ingredients, beverage heritage and the overall visitor experience.

Sri Lanka’s inclusion reflects the growing international appreciation for its diverse food culture, where centuries of cultural influence, fragrant spices, tropical produce and abundant seafood combine to create a cuisine that is both distinctive and widely admired.

In its review, TTW described Sri Lanka as a destination offering memorable culinary experiences ranging from bustling roadside eateries to sophisticated coastal restaurants. The publication praised the country’s blend of authentic flavours, regional diversity and longstanding food traditions that continue to appeal to travellers seeking immersive cultural experiences.

Among the dishes highlighted were the country’s iconic rice and curry, hoppers, kottu, fresh seafood specialities and a variety of traditional desserts, all of which have become increasingly popular with international visitors.

TTW also identified ten destinations across the island that offer exceptional food experiences. Colombo was recognised for its vibrant mix of traditional and contemporary cuisine, while Galle stood out for its seafood and colonial-era dining culture. Kandy was noted for its authentic local dishes and traditional sweets, and Negombo for its lagoon seafood and fish curries. Ella earned recognition for its organic produce and hill-country cuisine, while Jaffna was praised for its bold Tamil-inspired flavours, including its famous crab curry. Mirissa, Nuwara Eliya, Hikkaduwa and Trincomalee also featured prominently for their fresh seafood, coastal cuisine and distinctive regional specialities.

The publication ranked Mexico as the world’s leading food destination for 2026, followed by Italy and Spain. Other countries occupying the top ten included Japan, India, the United States, Greece, Portugal, China and Indonesia.

Sri Lanka was placed 50th in the global rankings, joining a list that showcases some of the world’s most celebrated culinary destinations across Europe, Asia, the Americas, Africa and the Middle East. According to TTW, the selected countries have successfully preserved their culinary traditions while embracing innovation and sustainable food practices.

Tourism industry observers believe the recognition is likely to further enhance Sri Lanka’s reputation as a destination for food tourism, complementing its appeal for beaches, wildlife, heritage and cultural attractions. As international travellers increasingly seek authentic local experiences, the country’s unique cuisine is expected to play an even greater role in attracting visitors in the years ahead.
